Roofs and roof coverings
Removing an old asbestos roof and buying its replacement are separate expenses. A grant may cover only one of them. Before ordering roofing sheets or hiring a contractor, check what the scheme covers, the application deadline and the rules for claiming payment. Have the roof structure assessed and agree how the waste will be handled. Budget for the whole roof, including flashings, gutters and repairs to the timbers. Municipal funding in Poland often covers dismantling, collection, transport or disposal of asbestos-containing materials. Check the terms of the individual funding round to see whether new roofing is eligible and whether you can reclaim costs you have already incurred.

What does funding for asbestos removal cover?
An invoice alone does not establish eligibility for reimbursement.
Different rules may apply to homes and agricultural buildings. Check the terms of the programme for your particular building. A past funding round does not guarantee another. Ask the funding body to confirm in writing whether funds are available, which documents it needs and when the agreement must be signed. You can then align the roofing schedule with the funding timetable.
How can you identify the material on your roof?
Old asbestos cement sheets require different handling from modern asbestos-free fibre cement sheets. Appearance alone cannot distinguish them. Building records, product markings and an assessment by a qualified specialist can help. Never break or drill a sheet yourself to take a sample. Disturbing the material can release hazardous fibres.
Include photographs, the area of the roof covering and a current condition assessment. The roof area differs from the building footprint because the slope and eaves affect the dimensions. In the estimate, distinguish the quantity of material to be removed, the area to be re-covered and the extra sheets needed for overlaps.
Which documents should you prepare before hiring a contractor?
The document list varies by scheme. Start with the property’s details and evidence that you are entitled to apply. Check the conditions for joint ownership, powers of attorney and consent from other owners. Prepare a description of the work and an estimate. Ask the authority whether you have to name a contractor before applying.
Deal with funding and building procedures separately. Grant approval does not replace any required building notice or permit. The procedure depends on the work, the condition of the building and any protections applying to the site. Changes to the structure, roof shape or use of the attic may require different documents from those needed simply to replace the covering.
How should removal and waste collection be coordinated?
Hire a contractor who meets the requirements for asbestos removal and can secure the waste properly. Agree the sequence of removal, packaging, transport and the disposal site. Confirm that the receiving facility accepts asbestos waste. It must be handled separately from ordinary rubble, offcuts of new roofing sheet or timber.
Specify in the contract who will provide evidence that the waste was handed over correctly. Also agree how the open roof will be protected from rain. The removal crew and roofers need a common schedule that keeps the rooms and structure protected between stages.
Are T18 or T35 trapezoidal sheets suitable for the new roof?
T18 or T35 trapezoidal steel sheet may suit a roof renovation. Both are relatively light compared with many heavy roof coverings. Selection depends on design loads, support spacing, roof pitch and the data sheet for the specific product. A deeper profile cannot compensate for a weakened roof structure. Have the timbers and their connections checked before you order.
For a house, metal roof tiles are another option, either cut to length or supplied as modular sheets. Compare complete roof costs, including underlay, battens, screws, flashings, ventilation and gutters. If the renovation includes insulation, PIR boards with a suitably low thermal conductivity can reduce the thickness required. The layers still need to work together as a properly designed roof build-up.
How can you account for the full cost of the work?
Before signing, check what evidence the funding body needs to release payment. This may include acceptance reports, invoices, photographs, waste handover records or other documents listed in the scheme rules. A neighbour’s earlier application may have been subject to different terms. The deadline for completing the work may also differ from the deadline for submitting your claim.
Allow for defects that become visible only after the old covering is removed. Replacing a rotten board, correcting a support or fitting a new chimney flashing may fall outside the grant. A workable budget identifies what the scheme pays, which costs you will meet yourself and how completion of each part of the work will be documented.
